Well just like all the experts said we had an attempted prison break last night... WORM stampede! They were trying to run away! The alarms, sirens and lights along with the tear gas canisters scared them back in the bucket... I thought I was going to need to pull out the 9mm to defend the house... Tonight I am putting up some electric fence and machine gun positions around the worm can... LOL
Worms are amazing, they are climbing the side of the bucket trying to get out. Thank goodness I had a good lid on the container that allows air in, but the worms cannot get out... Whew, that would have been quite a mess this morning if they had figured out how to get out of that bucket! LOL
It appears they are eating well and are already putting a big dent in the food that I have put in there. They appear to be moving around a lot so it looks like I got a good group of worms if I can just get them to settle in and enjoy the banquet we are serving up.
Hopefully our worm bin will be here today to help with this process. This afternoon during my lunch break I will head out and work on another garden bed, load it up with manure and wood chips, some rock dust and some nitrogen fertilizer... I will save a garbage can of aged manure for the worms so we can supplement their feed when we don't have enough food scraps to feed them. Once growing season starts we will have more than they will know what to do with so I am hoping the worm population takes off. I am expecting to double the population in roughly 90 days so that would mean we can probably triple this population by the end of the year. That is if I don't have any unforeseen issues with them. Getting the right balance in the bins takes a little practice much like when your working compost bins... To get the balance of moisture, carbon, and nitrogen to get your compost hot and cooking... With worms your not trying to get them hot, but you do have to watch your moisture, PH, and carbon mixture.
So we have a some learning to do here!
I hope you have a wonderful and blessed day!
